Survival in these conditions means living underground. You take on the role of a prominent architect in charge of construction of such an underground world. This is not an ordinary survival bunker. It is a fully operating underground empire, where the inhabitants, known as Dwellers, can lead a normal and safe life. A part of the goal is to create a closed ecological system, where the community is completely self sufficient and meets all the needs of the inhabitants, and completely shields them from the atrocities of the post nuclear world.
Constructing the vault is a major aspect of the game, requiring players to transform 2,000 feet of solid bedrock into living space, by placing various chambers of varying functions. The architect must build more than simple bedrooms, the vault must house other facilities such as restaurants, supermarkets and theaters. All these must be constructed in an optimal and efficacious way to ensure life within the vault is worth living. The rooms within the vault are designed realistically. The aim is to help the players visualize what it takes to build an underground, self contained, and functioning society.
In addition to building the vault, the player must manage the dwellers. Each Dweller has needs and wants. Exploring the Wasteland, however, can be very risky, and if players are not careful, their Dwellers can encounter an ugly end while searching for new and better gear.
The game allows for great deal of personalization. Residents can build or craft items to enhance the other items found in the Wasteland. Every item discovered in the Wasteland has a potential use in the vault economy. Players can also influence the appearance of their Dwellers by visiting the barber shop.
